Jammu: The Jammu Youth Congress has mobilized against the recent decision by the Modi government to increase the powers of the Lieutenant Governor in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the context of the forthcoming assembly elections.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protest, led by Maan Singh Rathore, took place at Maharaja Hari Singh Park in Jammu. The demonstrators, vocal in their dissent, attempted to march but were halted by police intervention, resulting in the detention of numerous participants. The Youth Congress argues that this move mirrors the governance model of Delhi, where the Lieutenant Governor holds substantial sway over local government operations, overshadowing the elected chief minister’s role.
Rathore criticized the central government’s reluctance to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, urging the public to oppose the augmentation of the Lieutenant Governor’s powers and to advocate for the region’s autonomy.
