Japan and UNDP Conclude $3.7 Million Disaster Preparedness Project in Pakistan

Islamabad: Supported by the Government of Japan and in partnership with the Economic Affairs Division and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) in Sindh and Balochistan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has conducted a closing ceremony in Islamabad today for the successful completion of the USD 3.7 million project titled ‘Strengthening Tsunami and Earthquake Preparedness in Coastal Areas of Pakistan.’

According to United Nations Development Programme, the project aimed to enhance disaster preparedness and response capabilities in Pakistan’s coastal communities, focusing on the districts of Malir, West/Keamari in Karachi, and Gwadar. It addressed critical development challenges by revising tsunami and earthquake preparedness guidelines and strengthening the disaster response capacity of these vulnerable areas. The initiative also emphasized gender equity in its disaster risk mitigation strategies.

Mr. Wajahat Ahmed, Assistant Director (Civil) of PDMA Sindh, highlighted the project’s impact, stating that it represents a significant milestone in enhancing disaster resilience through collaborative efforts and expertise. The Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Mitsuhiro Wada, reiterated Japan’s commitment to sharing its extensive experience in disaster risk management to promote sustainable development and poverty eradication.

Dr. Samuel Rizk, UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative, remarked that the project’s conclusion marks the beginning of a new chapter in building resilient communities and institutions, ensuring a continued focus on disaster preparedness in Pakistan’s coastal regions.
