Karachi, Ahead of the holy month of Ramazan, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has raised alarms over the escalating inflationary trend affecting household products and commodities. The Senior Vice President of KCCI, Altaf A. Ghaffar, has appealed to the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, to convene a meeting of the Price Control Committee urgently. This call to action aims to formulate and enforce strategies to combat the soaring prices and address the challenges posed by profiteers and hoarders to the economic wellbeing of Karachi’s residents.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the prevailing inflationary pressures demand immediate and rigorous interventions. Ghaffar highlighted the urgent need for stringent measures against those exploiting the situation by artificially inflating prices and creating shortages, exacerbating the financial strain on the city’s poor and middle-class populations. The Senior Vice President stressed that without decisive action, the inflation “tsunami” could severely impact the already burdened citizens, particularly as Ramazan approaches.
Ghaffar further emphasized the necessity of developing a robust price control mechanism that specifies the final rates and profit margins for household products, ensuring transparent and equitable pricing. He advocated for the inclusion of market associations in committees tasked with price regulation, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to address the issue comprehensively.
The statement from KCCI also shed light on the observation that some retailers have been raising prices independently of the actual increases in energy costs, exploiting the lack of enforcement of official price lists. Ghaffar called for a thorough review and stricter implementation of price control strategies to curb these practices.
The lack of attention from district Deputy Commissioners to stabilize essential commodity prices was criticized, with a call for more effective administrative measures. Ghaffar expressed hope that the Chief Minister would swiftly address these concerns by gathering all relevant stakeholders for a decisive Price Control Committee meeting, aiming to outline and execute a plan of action to alleviate the financial pressures on Karachi’s inhabitants during the forthcoming Ramazan season.
