Karachi: In response to the escalating viral and epidemic diseases in Karachi and the broader Sindh region, the President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, has formally requested the Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, to enhance the emergency department capacities at all hospitals. This appeal aims to address the severe shortage of emergency care facilities faced by patients during critical times.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a recent survey initiated by KCCI found that hospitals across the city are struggling to accommodate patients, with many waiting several hours for a bed. The letter to the Chief Minister highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the current healthcare facilities are inadequate to handle the increasing patient load caused by diseases such as the Chikungunya virus, dengue, Zika, monkeypox, and other complex illnesses.
The KCCI has urged the Chief Minister to direct the Health Department to conduct a comprehensive review of hospital capacities in Karachi to better understand and address the crisis. The chamber emphasized the potential for a disastrous escalation in the event of a natural calamity, given the already strained healthcare infrastructure.
President Bilwani expressed hope that the Chief Minister would act swiftly to mitigate the risk to public health by doubling the capacity of emergency departments throughout the region, thereby safeguarding the community against the loss of lives due to preventable medical delays.
