Karachi Implements Comprehensive Heat Wave Management Strategy

Karachi, Amid rising temperatures, city officials convened a crucial meeting led by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hasan Naqvi to outline a comprehensive strategy for managing heat-related emergencies. The session, which involved various civic bodies including the Municipal Commissioner Baldia Uzma Karachi SM Afzal Zaidi, focused on enhancing public awareness and preparedness for heat waves through a city-wide campaign.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the meeting set forth a multifaceted approach involving Deputy Commissioners, the Director of Health, Town Municipal Commissioners, and non-governmental organizations to spearhead an awareness campaign about heat stroke prevention. This campaign will utilize media outlets, social media, and local mosques to disseminate critical information.

Key initiatives include the establishment of heat stroke rehabilitation centers equipped with trained staff, essential medicines, ice bags, and ample water supplies. Plans for setting up free water centers across districts, dedicated heat stroke wards in medical facilities, and divisional control rooms were also discussed to ensure coordinated responses during heat wave incidents.

Additional measures agreed upon include uninterrupted water and electricity supply during peak heat hours, coordinated by KMC, TMCs, and NGOs. The Director of Health Sindh will issue summer heat wave precautionary guidelines, while K Electric committed to continuous power supply from noon to 3 PM. Water distribution will be expanded to major roads, highways, cattle markets, and graveyards, as well as in all educational institutions in Karachi.

The Sindh Healthcare Commission will engage with private hospitals to streamline emergency protocols. Moreover, emergency services like Edhi, Chhepa, and 1122 will provide comprehensive lists of their ambulances and driver contacts to ensure swift medical responses. DIG Traffic will also implement special traffic flow measures around major hospitals to facilitate the movement of ambulances and emergency vehicles.
