Karachi Mayor Sets Ten-Day Deadline for Hospital Improvement Proposals

Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has mandated a ten-day deadline for Medical Superintendents to submit proposals aimed at boosting the efficiency of KMC-run hospitals, with a focus on enhancing facilities at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and ensuring full functionality of all departments.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, during a meeting with officials from the Medical and Health Services Department, Mayor Wahab outlined the urgency of improving healthcare services, stressing the implementation of a biometric system to monitor employee attendance and advocating for the dismissal of persistently absent staff. The meeting, attended by Municipal Commissioner KMC S.M Afzal Zaidi and key medical personnel, also addressed the broader financial commitments of the KMC towards healthcare, underscoring the need for hospitals to effectively serve the city’s poorer and middle-class citizens through reliable medical care.

Mayor Wahab also directed attention to upgrading emergency wards, outpatient departments (OPDs), and laboratories by harnessing the technical skills of doctors and paramedical staff. Further directives were issued to make the KMC mortuary in Landhi operational and to expedite the creation of modern morgues across Karachi to meet essential needs. Additionally, he called for ongoing enhancements to the city’s leprosy hospital in Manghopir, where 89 permanent patients receive care through collaborations with welfare organizations.
