Karachi Traders Alarmed by Rising Extortion Threats

Karachi: The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) President, Mohammad Ikram Rajput, has raised serious concerns over the increasing incidents of extortion targeting traders and industrialists in Karachi. Rajput called on the Sindh government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action to safeguard the business community.

The rise in extortion activities is creating a climate of fear among Karachi’s industrialists, who are already grappling with economic challenges. Rajput noted that traders and factory owners are receiving threats, including extortion letters accompanied by bullets, leading many to refrain from lodging complaints due to fear.

This situation, Rajput warned, poses a significant threat to the entire industrial structure, potentially discouraging investment and hindering economic growth. According to recent security reports, over 96 extortion cases have been reported in Karachi this year, with the highest number in the Central District.

Despite some arrests and police encounters, the business community remains on edge. Rajput revealed that factory owners in Korangi and other industrial zones are operating under constant fear, as recent incidents indicate that extortionists are becoming more daring.

The extortion network is reportedly operated by various criminal groups, whose activities not only jeopardize the city’s peace but also allegedly involve transferring funds abroad.

Rajput urged the Governor Sindh, Chief Minister Sindh, DG Rangers, and IG Sindh Police to devise a joint strategy to dismantle these networks and provide security to the business sector. He stressed the need for immediate government action to restore Karachi’s image as a thriving trade hub.

KATI and the business community are prepared to cooperate with authorities to address this menace and ensure a stable business environment, Rajput emphasized.
