Kashmiris Mark India’s Republic Day with Protests and Shutdown

Srinagar: Kashmiris across both sides of the Line of Control and around the world observed India’s Republic Day as Black Day, emphasizing their protest against India’s continued refusal to grant them the right to self-determination.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, along with other pro-freedom organizations, called for the demonstrations. The day witnessed a complete shutdown in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, with anti-India rallies occurring in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, and significant cities worldwide.

The protests aim to convey to the international community that India, as the occupying force in Kashmir, lacks the moral and legal authority to celebrate its Republic Day on disputed territory.

In response to the protests, there were heightened restrictions under the guise of security measures, adding to the challenging conditions faced by the local population.

From New Delhi’s Tihar jail, Masarrat Aalam Butt, the incarcerated Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, criticized India’s military presence in the region, labeling it illegal and unconstitutional, and a breach of international law.
