Kazakh Envoy Stresses Importance of Road and Rail Links for Boosting Pakistan Cooperation

Islamabad, The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Pakistan, Yerzhan Kistafin, has highlighted the critical need for enhanced road and rail connectivity between Pakistan and Kazakhstan to boost bilateral relations, particularly in the sectors of trade and energy. In an interview with Radio Pakistan, the Ambassador discussed the multifaceted cooperation between the two nations and outlined several initiatives aimed at strengthening these ties.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Kistafin expressed satisfaction with the current state of friendly and cordial relations between Pakistan and Kazakhstan. He mentioned ongoing cooperation across various sectors and emphasized the potential to elevate this to new heights through regular political dialogue and anticipated high-level visits, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s expected participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Astana.

The Ambassador pointed out that despite a friendly relationship, the trade volume between the two countries, which stood at one hundred million dollars last year, is relatively modest. He suggested that with improved connectivity, this could potentially increase to one billion dollars. Kazakhstan, known for its substantial wheat production and rich mineral and energy resources, could significantly augment Pakistan’s supply in these areas.

In addition to trade, Kistafin noted the ongoing development of bilateral cooperation in agriculture, education, and culture. He highlighted the formation of a joint working group on agriculture during the 12th Inter-Governmental Joint Commission in Astana and plans for another ministerial session later this year to further cultural and educational exchanges.

The Ambassador also addressed Kazakhstan’s current chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, emphasizing the priority given to enhancing regional cooperation, including connectivity among SCO member states. He stressed the importance of multilateral interactions to tackle challenges like terrorism, energy security, and climate change, and called for increased engagement between the security services of both countries.

Lastly, Kistafin expressed hopes for restoring historical and cultural bonds on a provincial level and enhancing cooperation in preserving cultural heritage. He also advocated for stronger media relations to foster a direct exchange of information, crucial in the current global context.
