KARACHI: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged immediate action to address the ongoing development work on M.A. Jinnah Road, which is causing significant disruptions for businesses in the area. President KCCI, Muhammad Rehan Hanif, expressed grave concern over the impact on traders and shopkeepers during a meeting with the All-Pakistan Motorcycle Spare Parts Importers and Dealers Association (APMSPIDA).
The development work, situated in front of Aurangzeb Market and affecting other nearby markets like Iqbal Center and Tyre Market, poses a serious threat to local businesses. Hanif emphasized the urgent need for the restoration of this key commercial artery to prevent potential closures.
KCCI plans to approach Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab to expedite the road’s repair. The unfinished work has disrupted business activities and hampered access, necessitating either completion or immediate restoration to the road’s original state.
The meeting, attended by prominent figures from both KCCI and APMSPIDA, also addressed import-related challenges faced by APMSPIDA members. Hanif assured that KCCI would facilitate discussions with the Federal Board of Revenue and Customs to seek relief in customs duties.
Concerns over law and order were also highlighted, with Hanif pledging to organize a meeting between APMSPIDA members and police officials to address the rising incidents impacting traders. KCCI aims to collaborate with law enforcement to combat street crimes and extortion.
Another pressing issue discussed was the Rs9.3 million quotation from K-Electric for a dedicated power transformer, which APMSPIDA finds unaffordable. KCCI will negotiate with K-Electric and convene a joint meeting to find a viable solution to ongoing power shortages and load shedding.
Sohail Usman Sheikh, Chairman of APMSPIDA, praised KCCI’s leadership and stressed the need for stronger coordination between trade bodies to push for national reforms. He noted the adverse effects of the road’s half-dug condition on commercial activity, urging KCCI to advocate for swift action.
Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to protecting business interests and maintaining a conducive environment for economic activities in Karachi.
