Kejriwal Vows Return to Jail in Defense of Democracy, Claims Mistreatment

New Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Friday that he would voluntarily return to Tihar Jail, as his interim bail—granted by the Indian Supreme Court for election campaigning—expires. Kejriwal expressed readiness to be incarcerated again, framing it as a stand against authoritarianism in the country.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a virtual press conference, Kejriwal stated that his 21-day bail period allotted by the Supreme Court for election campaigning had ended. “Day after tomorrow, I will return to Tihar Jail,” he declared. Kejriwal spoke about his previous jail experience, where he claimed to have faced numerous hardships, including the denial of essential diabetes medication, which he said severely impacted his health.

The Chief Minister accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of mistreatment during his previous 50-day jail stint, alleging that his insulin injections were withheld, leading to dangerously high blood sugar levels. This purported neglect, he said, posed serious risks to his kidney and liver health, and resulted in a significant weight loss.

On Thursday, a Delhi court responded to these developments by issuing a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), requesting their input on Kejriwal’s plea for regular bail linked to charges in an alleged excise policy scam. Additionally, Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue Court is considering his request for a week’s interim bail on medical grounds.
