Khalistan leaders in West complain of receiving life threats

Toronto, June 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): Amid continued incidents of killing and suspicious deaths of Khalistan leaders in the West and elsewhere in the world, which Sikh diaspora believe the handiwork of Indian secret agencies and Hindutva gangs, Sikh community leaders in the US, Canada and Europe have raised concern about safety of their life. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who has been running the Khalistan Referendum campaign, has gone missing for the past few days. It is unknown whether he has been abducted or has gone into hiding for safety. His disappearance occurred after his aide Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Canada.

Not only Pannun, several other Khalistani leaders have complained of receiving threats. Many of them have gone into hiding after the threats. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Paramjit Singh Panjwar, Avtar Singh Khanda and Harmeet Singh are among four prominent Khalistani leaders to have died mysteriously abroad in recent months.

Four top Khalistan leaders have died in six months as India tries to “tackle a surge in separatist activities”, wrote India Today. Avtar Singh Khanda, a leading figure of Khalistan was diagnosed recently with terminal cancer and died in a hospital in the UK. Interestingly, Khanda’s death was also attributed to poisoning.

In May, Singh Panjwar was shot dead by two men on a bike. In January, Harmeet Singh alias Happy PhD was killed on the premises of a gurdwara near Lahore. The string of deaths, four in six months, analysts believe, could not be accidental. They suspect the hand of Indian secret agencies and the Hindutva gangs backed by New Delhi behind the killing of these Sikh leaders.
