Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a plan to solarise all public sector buildings across the province, aiming to ensure continuous electricity supply and reduce energy costs for the government.
According to Zameen.Com, the initiative, which includes hospitals, schools, colleges, universities, police stations, prisons, and other government offices, is part of the province’s broader effort to transition to renewable energy. A committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur reviewed the solarisation project’s progress, discussing the action plan and technical requirements. The meeting, attended by Advisor to Chief Minister for Finance Muzammil Aslam and other officials, focused on the project’s implementation strategy.
The committee was informed that data collection on the energy demands of public sector buildings is ongoing. Approximately 13,000 units have been assessed, with a total solar system capacity requirement of 73 MW identified. Once the project is fully implemented, it is expected to generate 92 million units of solar power annually.
The solarisation project is estimated to cost Rs10 billion and is projected to save the provincial government around Rs2 billion annually in electricity bills. The initiative will cover key public sector units, ensuring reliable power for their operations.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Gandapur emphasized the need to expedite the project’s implementation and complete necessary requirements within a week to begin benefiting from solar energy. Additionally, the government plans a similar solarisation initiative for mosques and madaris, aiming to convert 7,000 mosques and 3,000 madaris to solar energy.
This Rs10 billion project is a significant step toward sustainability and energy efficiency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, aligning with the provincial government’s goals to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and promote green energy solutions.
