Massive Tree Felling Scandal Uncovered in Handwara-Bangus Road Project

Srinagar: A scandal involving the uprooting of over 25,000 trees and medicinal plants has emerged in the Handwara-Bangus road project, sparking ecological concerns in the Rajwar Forests of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the revelation was brought to light by Advocate Rasikh Rasool’s petition in the Green Tribunal, which uncovered numerous illegalities and instances of corruption within the project. The scandal involves collusion between forest authorities and a prominent Indian construction company, leading to severe environmental repercussions. This incident underscores the broader ecological vulnerability of the region, exacerbated by the ongoing deforestation activities attributed to the Indian army and local timber mafias.

The road project, plagued by the misuse of funds and involvement of politically connected subcontractors, has not only led to significant environmental damage but also adversely affected local communities, stripping them of livelihood opportunities and contributing to increased soil erosion, landslides, and loss of biodiversity. This crisis highlights the urgent need for enhanced accountability and sustainable development practices, especially in areas vulnerable to climate change.
