Mayor of Karachi Urges Local Tax Compliance to Enhance City Services

Karachi: At a high-level meeting with heads of various departments, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab called on the citizens of Karachi to fulfill their tax obligations to local bodies, emphasizing that these contributions are crucial for the city’s operations and improvements in municipal services.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab addressed the challenges of rainwater drainage in the city, highlighting efforts to manage the situation efficiently with the installation of robust pumping systems. He pointed out that while the city is prepared for monsoon rains as per the Meteorological Department’s forecasts, overcoming the remaining challenges requires community cooperation.

The Mayor also noted significant advancements in preventing rainwater accumulation at historically problematic sites, including the Wazir Mansion. He discussed the financial strains on local resources, mentioning that the Water Board is owed 52 billion rupees by residents, which could significantly aid in enhancing water supply and drainage systems. The ongoing upgrades at the Jamila Pumping Station, supported by recently arrived machinery, are expected to markedly improve water distribution, especially in the older parts of Karachi. Mayor Wahab stressed the importance of civic responsibility in maintaining and funding municipal services such as the fire brigade and drain cleaning, which are critical for the city’s functionality.
