Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Placed Under House Arrest on Kashmir Martyrs’ Day

Srinagar: Authorities in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir have placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a senior leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, under house arrest in Srinagar to prevent him from attending a commemorative event at the Martyrs’ Graveyard on the anniversary of the July 13, 1931, killings.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Hurriyat Conference issued a statement condemning the detention of Mirwaiz on this poignant date, which marks the sacrifice of Kashmiris who stood against autocratic rule. The action by Indian authorities is seen as part of a broader strategy to suppress Kashmiri commemoration of historical resistance and to curb their ongoing struggle for self-determination. The Hurriyat Conference also honored the legacy of the 1931 martyrs, noting that their sacrifice remains a powerful symbol of resistance and aspiration for the Kashmiri people.
