New Delhi: A Muslim family in Sambhal town, Uttar Pradesh, is reportedly being pressured by government authorities and Hindu extremist groups to vacate their property. The move is intended to facilitate rituals at a recently “rediscovered” temple in the area.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the family alleges that they are being forced to demolish their home to accommodate worship activities at the Shri Kartik Mahadev Temple. The temple was claimed to have been “uncovered” by the Yogi government in December 2023.
The temple, situated in the predominantly Muslim Khaggo Sarai neighborhood, has become a contentious issue within the community. Official accounts suggest the temple was shut for decades after Hindu residents left the area following riots in 1978. However, local residents challenge this version, asserting that the temple has always existed but was seldom utilized due to a lack of worshipers.
Mohammad Mateen, a driver by profession, and his family have resided in their home next to the temple since 2002. The land was purchased by Mateen with his savings. The administration now claims the house obstructs the “pari karma” or ritual circumambulation path of the temple.
