National Disaster Management Authority supplements relief efforts in flood hit areas

Islamabad, September 11, 2014 (PPI-OT): The ongoing floods in river Chenab after devastating vast tract of land and inflicting damages to the public and private property besides human life in the Marala- Trimmu reach is passing through Trimmu Headwork.

A peak discharge of 626,000 cusecs passed through the headwork on September 10th. The flow is now moving to Guddu Battage enroute Punjnad Headworks, where according to FFD, Lahore a High to Very High flood discharge in the range of 600,000 cusecs to 70,000 cusecs is expected sometimes between September 15th and September 16th.

In response to the recent floods that have affected various parts of Punjab along river Chenab and river Jhelum, AJK and GB and that have inflicted caused heavy loss to human life, property, damage to crops, roads and infrastructure, the government has mobilized all resources for efficient rescue and relief on ground.

In order to ensure timely response to the current flood situation in the country, all concerned authorities and departments including National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Armed Forces, Rescue 1122 and district administration are working hand in glove and tirelessly to cope with this calamity.

As of 11th September 2014, 17 helicopters and 574 boats (provided by Army and provincial government) are actively participating in the rescue and relief operation while 14,0,330 evacuations have been so far made to safer areas.

In order to ensure timely relief assistance and to further gearup rescue and relief operation as per Government’s instructions, NDMA has mobilized its relief stocks which are being provided to Punjab and AJK.

So far, NDMA has dispatched 20,000 Tents, 10,000 Plastic Mats, 20,000 Blankets, 1 million Aqua Tablets and 30 mobile Filtration Plants, 31 boats and 100 life jackets to Punjab, 3,000 tents,1000 blankets and 1500 plastic mats to AJK as well as 200tents, 1000 blankets and 3 boats to ICT and 275 tents to GB.

NDMA teams are still in the field for monitoring and coordination with local administration to supplement the relief efforts. NDMA’s National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) is operational 24/7 since July 15th 2014 and is constantly monitoring the ground situation to coordinate better response and requirements in the field.
