OGDCL Advances Tight Gas Exploration in Pakistan’s Indus Basin

Karachi: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) is advancing its exploration of tight gas resources in Pakistan’s Indus Basin, aligning with the Government of Pakistan’s new Tight Gas Policy 2024. The company has achieved initial success with the production from its first tight gas well, Nur West-1, and is planning further development through in-house expertise.

According to Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, a comprehensive study has been initiated to evaluate tight gas prospectivity in key areas of the Lower Indus Basin, Sindh. To support this initiative, OGDCL issued an international tender on March 7, 2024. Following a competitive evaluation process, Schlumberger was selected as the preferred contractor to conduct an Integrated Study of Tight Gas Prospectivity Evaluation.

The study aims to identify the most promising tight gas areas and wells, which will inform OGDCL’s strategies for drilling and production. It will focus on locating optimal sites for new wells and re-entry opportunities for existing wells to conduct hydraulic fracturing and access gas from tight reservoirs.

OGDCL’s collaboration with Schlumberger is anticipated to bring expertise and innovation to the sector, facilitating the sustainable exploitation of Pakistan’s hydrocarbon resources. Based on preliminary regional studies, Pakistan’s tight gas resource is estimated at 25.2 trillion cubic feet. OGDCL plans to drill 25 wells with an initial production potential of 60-75 million standard cubic feet per day and an estimated reserve of 75-90 billion cubic feet over the next five years.
