Karachi, In a move to diversify trade links, the Consul General of the Sultanate of Oman, Eng. Sami Abdullah Al Khanjari, has emphasized the potential for Pakistan to increase its export of agricultural products to Oman.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Eng. Al Khanjari highlighted the long-standing import of Pakistani rice by Oman, which began in 1982, and expressed a desire to expand beyond the current 60 percent market share. He noted that Omani imports currently include a wide range of goods from countries like Türkiye, China, India, and Australia, but he sees a significant opportunity for Pakistani products such as onions, potatoes, lentils, mangoes, sugar, textiles, and towels to gain a stronger foothold in the Omani market.
The meeting, which took place at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was attended by several dignitaries including Vice Consul General Abdullah Jumah Al Harbi, and officials from the Omani Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. The Omani delegation, which is visiting to enhance food security and trade relationships, has engaged with various local entities including the Governor of Sindh and the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan.
In response, the President of KCCI, Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, discussed the broad economic ties between Pakistan and Oman, emphasizing the potential for growth in bilateral trade, which currently stands at a lower level than the possible maximum, given the close cultural and economic ties between the two nations. Sheikh outlined several measures to enhance trade, including reducing trade barriers, simplifying customs procedures, and increasing engagement through expos and trade delegations.
The Omani delegation expressed a keen interest in facilitating regular visits to Pakistan to explore and expand the range of products that can be exported to Oman. This initiative is seen as part of a broader strategy to strengthen economic ties and leverage Pakistan’s strategic position and product offerings to boost bilateral trade.
