Islamabad, At the launching ceremony of USAID’s Pakistan Climate Financing Activity, Romina Khursheed Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change, emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening climate resilience through collaborative initiatives with the United States. Alam highlighted the severe impacts of global warming on Pakistan, a country that contributes less than 1 percent to the world’s carbon emissions but faces disproportionate climate challenges.
According to Press Information Department, Alam detailed the catastrophic effects of climate change experienced by Pakistan, notably referencing the 2022 floods that submerged one-third of the country, affecting 33 million people across 81 districts. These events underscore Pakistan’s position as the fifth most vulnerable country to climate change globally, as per the Global Climate Risk Index.
During her address, Alam advocated for tailored regional solutions that leverage public-private partnerships, involving stakeholders from banking, real estate, and industrial sectors. She stressed the importance of building climate resilience and ensuring sustainable development as critical priorities for Pakistan and the global community at large.
Concluding her speech, Alam assured full government support for the USAID initiative, signaling a strong commitment to international cooperation in tackling the pressing challenges of climate change. This partnership aims to enhance mitigation efforts, promote adaptation strategies, and secure financing to protect the environment and vulnerable populations in Pakistan.
