Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has launched a significant initiative to identify potential sites for new deep-sea ports along Pakistan’s coastline. The move is part of a broader vision aimed at bolstering the country’s maritime capabilities over the next century.
In a statement, Chaudhry announced the formation of a high-level, multi-agency committee tasked with identifying strategic locations for the development of three new ports. This effort is part of his “Hundred Years Vision 2047-2147,” which he detailed during National Maritime Week in Karachi.
The minister plans to attend the inaugural meeting of the 12-member committee next week. The group is directed to produce a comprehensive feasibility report within three months, including technical analyses and investment recommendations.
Pakistan’s extensive coastline, spanning over 1,024 kilometers, is poised for substantial maritime trade expansion. The country’s GDP is projected to reach $1 trillion between 2030 and 2035, necessitating enhanced port infrastructure.
Current ports, including Port Qasim, Karachi Port Trust, and Gwadar Port, operate below full capacity but are expected to reach their limits by 2045 due to increased industrial demand and regional trade.
Chaudhry highlighted the potential congestion caused by increased cargo movement and urban development along the coast. He envisions establishing new ports with modern facilities to address these challenges and align with Pakistan’s growing trade needs.
The committee, including representatives from regional port authorities and government agencies, will conduct detailed analyses to identify viable port sites. Their assessment will cover environmental conditions, connectivity, and industrial linkages to ensure sustainable development.
The initiative seeks to strengthen Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure, enhance regional connectivity, and position the country as a key maritime hub in the Indian Ocean over the coming century.
The committee will collaborate with provincial governments and federal agencies to ensure a coordinated national strategy for maritime expansion. Chaudhry emphasized the importance of planning for future maritime industries and trade routes.
“The next century belongs to the oceans,” Chaudhry stated, underscoring the need for strategic planning in Pakistan’s maritime sector.
