PCJCCI Highlights Potential for Tripling Pakistani Honey Exports with Certification and Technology

Karachi, The President of the Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI), Moazzam Ghurki, emphasized the potential for significantly increasing the value of Pakistani honey exports through certification and technological advancements. This was stated during a think tank session held at the PCJCCI Secretariat.

According to Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ghurki pointed out that currently, Pakistani honey is sold for USD 20 to USD 25 per kilogram, but this price could rise to USD 100 per kilogram with proper packaging and certification in other countries. He underscored the urgency of upgrading the Pakistani honey industry by establishing labs, certification systems, and implementing management and supervision policies.

Ghurki noted that Pakistani honey, though cheaper and better tasting than New Zealand’s honey, lacks international certification, which has been attained by the latter from four international companies. He advocated for the establishment of a modern, internationally recognized laboratory to elevate Pakistani honey to a top-tier status. Additionally, he suggested establishing large-scale honey processing plants in Pakistan, highlighting the need to move away from traditional honey production methods.

Fang Yulong, Senior Vice President of PCJCCI, mentioned that Chinese honey-producing companies are ready to share honey production and processing technology with Pakistan. This technology includes advanced honey filtration, sterilization, and temperature control processes. Yulong also described a honey drying technique to reduce moisture content, crucial for quality improvement. He pointed out that China, being the world’s largest producer and exporter of honey, sees potential in the Pakistani beekeeping industry, especially if it receives adequate government support.

Hamza Khalid, Vice President of PCJCCI, provided data from the National Bank of Pakistan, stating that Pakistan exported 6.351 million US dollars of natural honey from July to November 2020, with the majority going to Saudi Arabia. He emphasized the unanimous agreement within the Pakistani industry on establishing a large-scale honey laboratory with international certification for honey testing and certification, to access high-end markets like Europe.

Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General of PCJCCI, suggested that Pakistan could form joint ventures with Chinese companies to expedite the implementation of Pakistani honey laboratories. He highlighted that Pakistan’s current honey production is around 20,000 tons, which could increase significantly with successful export certification.
