Islamabad, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has called for comprehensive efforts to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for every citizen, highlighting the need to overcome socioeconomic disparities in healthcare provision.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Minister’s remarks were made during a ceremony in Islamabad today, celebrating the Federation for Medical Education’s recognition of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. This acknowledgment, Iqbal noted, is a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to healthcare and medical education excellence, reflecting significant strides in the nation’s healthcare indicators.

Under Iqbal’s purview, Pakistan has seen a 3.5% increase in life expectancy and a 15% decrease in infant mortality rates over the past decade. Additionally, the country has experienced a 20% increase in healthcare facilities from 2007 to 2017, bringing the total to 7,089. These achievements underscore the concerted efforts of healthcare professionals, educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in enhancing the standards of medical education and healthcare delivery.

The Minister underscored the critical need for unified efforts to adhere to the national health roadmap, aimed at reducing disparities in healthcare access, expanding services, and realizing the goal of universal healthcare coverage. He specifically pointed out the pivotal role of doctors in championing for increased government investment and improved conditions in public health facilities.

Iqbal also addressed the pressing healthcare challenges facing Pakistan, including rural healthcare delivery, health equity, and shortages of medical professionals. He expressed confidence in the government’s strategic approach to healthcare, which focuses on raising awareness, enhancing access, and leveraging data to inform healthcare decisions, paving the way for a transformative healthcare system in Pakistan.
