President Zardari Marks May 9th as a Dark Day in Pakistan’s History

Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari has declared May 9, 2023, as a “dark day” in the annals of Pakistan’s history, characterized by widespread violence and vandalism led by a politically motivated mob. This day witnessed unprecedented attacks on public property and military installations, which significantly damaged the nation’s global standing and played into the hands of its adversaries.

According to Press Information Department, President Zardari vehemently condemned these acts, describing them as challenges to the state’s authority, the rule of law, and the stability of national institutions. While affirming the constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and expression, he emphasized the necessity for these rights to be exercised responsibly and within legal parameters. The President underscored the unacceptable nature of the violence, stating such behavior has no place in responsible democracies.

President Zardari praised the resilience and dedication of Pakistan’s Armed Forces and other institutions in safeguarding the country from various threats. He stressed that those responsible for the disturbances on May 9 must face legal accountability. Reflecting on the broader implications of such unrest, he noted that such actions by political entities exacerbate the socio-economic challenges facing Pakistan, hindering the progress the country has made.

In his call to action, President Zardari urged all political parties, parliament, media, and civil society to promote tolerance, uphold democratic values, and engage in constructive political dialogue. He highlighted the importance of redirecting Pakistan’s youth energies towards nation-building rather than inciting them against state institutions. Additionally, he expressed concern over malicious social media campaigns against state institutions and called for strategies to counteract misinformation. The President’s address concluded with a plea for unity and concerted efforts to end political polarization and lay the groundwork for a prosperous future for all Pakistanis.
