Prime Minister chairs meeting on National Internal Security

Islamabad, March 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister chaired a meeting on National Internal Security at PM house. The meeting was attended by all Chief Ministers, Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Rahil Sharif, DG (ISI) Lt Gen Zahirul Islam, Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen Ashfaq Ahmad Nadeem and DG (MO) Major General Amir Riaz. All Chief Secretaries and IGs of the Provinces and other government officials also attended the meeting.

DG Military Operations, Deputy Director General (ISI) and Interior Minister briefed the meeting on different aspects of Internal Security Issues. While addressing the participants the Prime Minister said that all the provincial governments and Institutions have to work hard to contribute and establishing security and eliminating terrorism. Economic prosperity is link with security and peace in Pakistan, PM added.

Newly legislated legal framework dealing with counter terrorism measures was reviewed. Prime Minister directed to immediately establish National Intelligence Directorate under NACTA to pool National and Provincial intelligence resources. Prime Minister also approved establishment of rapid response forces at Federal and Provincial levels with quality and trained manpower.

The capacities of Federal and Provincial Law Enforcement Agencies were also reviewed at length in the meeting. Prime Minister desired that Provinces should work more to ensure admissible evidence and efficient prosecution in heinous offenses within time limits. Prime Minister directed fast track establishment of high security prisons in all provinces.

Prime Minister directed that the provinces should utilize the options available in existing Protection of Pakistan Ordinance as this law has made electronic evidence admissible, allowed for video link trial with provision for transfer of trials/prisoners to other provinces and preventive detention of enemy aliens.

Later Prime Minister handed over Bomb Disposal Response Vehicles (BDRV) to the Provinces. The vehicles were received by the respective Provincial Chief Ministers. The Vehicles are equipped with latest technology to defuse the bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
