Islamabad, April 03, 2014 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif chaired a high level meeting regarding Pakistan Railways here in PM House today. The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, Federal Minister for Planning Mr. Ahsan Iqbal, Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif and senior government officers.
Prime Minister was apprised about the functioning of Railways, its history, present status and future direction. During the briefing, Prime Minister was told that present administration of Pakistan Railways is focused on the core business of transportation of goods and people.
Prime Minister stated that he appreciated ministry’s focus on improving governance based on rules and regulations, merit oriented Human Resource policy and ensuring transparency.
PM Muhammad Nawaz Sharif directed that all railway stations should be modernised with better services for citizens. PM was apprised that the target of Rs. 4.5 billion additional revenue was achieved this year and, with better management, there has been a reduction of Rs. 5 billion in losses of railway.
It was decided to reconstitute Railway’s Board with better representation from private sector. PM was told that work on Karachi Circular Railway will be initiated soon. The meeting was further informed that work has started on refurbishing and branding of railway stations and railway expects to generate substantial revenue from this activity.
Prime Minister was informed that Request for Proposals regarding feasibility study of Islamabad-Murree-Muzaffarabad Railway Link will be floated in the second week of April this year.
