Products and services meeting standards can penetrate in any global market and give quantum leap to exports of their countries: Iqbal Tabish

Islamabad, October 30, 2013 (PPI-OT): “Products and services, meeting standards can penetrate in any global market and give quantum leap to exports of their countries, which requires effective linkage between Industry and standard institutions in respective countries of South Asia” this was stated by Iqbal Tabish, Secretary General, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) at a two-day Steering Committee Meeting on “ Trade promotion through Standardization in the South and South East Asian region” (SESA), commenced from October 30, 2013 at Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The meeting was convened by Ms. Carina Svensson on behalf of Swedish International Standards Organization (SIS), which aims at undertaking various activities for capacity-building of National Standard Bodies (NSBs) of about ISO-13065 Sustainable criteria for bio-energy and ISO/TS 14067 for carbon footprints.

SG SAARC CCI said that products and services, complying standards have been contributing about 90% of the total world trade and no country could take quantum leap in exports until and unless comply international standards and focus on producing value-added, innovative brand products” and added that in view of environmental effects standards regarding bio-energy and carbon footprints were of great importance.

The SESA project involves selected South and South East countries including Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam. In addition to Dr. Lalith Senaweera, Director General, Sri Lanka standards Institute, representatives from NSBs from SESA countries and CUTS international attended the meeting.
