Lahore: The Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of exploiting religion to conceal its alleged corrupt practices. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Tarar referred to the conviction of PTI’s founder in a case involving 190 million pounds as one of the most pivotal verdicts in the nation’s history.
According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Tarar criticized PTI for using religious sentiments to divert attention from its corruption allegations. He described this tactic as reprehensible and condemned the manipulation of religious beliefs for political gain. Tarar’s comments came during a media briefing where he was joined by religious scholars from different schools of thought.
Tarar elaborated on the case, stating that the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency had conducted an investigation, which led to the recovery of 190 million pounds. This amount was repatriated to the Government of Pakistan. However, he alleged that the PTI founder and his spouse subsequently returned the money to the individual from whom it was originally seized.
The Minister also highlighted the role of Shahzad Akbar, who allegedly established an Asset Recovery Unit within the Prime Minister’s Office. Akbar reportedly informed the National Crime Agency that the funds had been returned to the Pakistani government. Tarar added that steps are being taken to extradite other individuals implicated in the case back to Pakistan.
