Chandigarh, Farmers’ unions in Punjab are intensifying their campaign against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by putting up posters across the state, declaring a boycott of the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections and banning the entry of its leaders into their villages.
According to Kashmir Media Service, with Punjab set to go to the polls on June 1, the movement spearheaded by various farmers’ unions, including the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, has gained momentum. These groups have been vocal about their opposition, particularly highlighting what they perceive as the BJP’s oppressive actions against farmers during protests on the Shambhu and Khanuri borders.
The posters, which carry messages like “Farmers’ entry to Delhi is banned, BJP’s entry to the village is banned,â€ are a testament to the escalating tensions between the farming community and the BJP. The campaign has also moved online, with videos condemning the Modi government circulating widely on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Peasant leader Baldev Singh Jira cited the harsh treatment of farmers by the Haryana government and the tragic incidents, including the death of Shub Karan Singh and serious injuries to others due to police actions, as key factors fueling the discontent and subsequent protest actions against the BJP.
