Quarry Collapse in Mizoram Claims 17 Lives Amid Cyclonic Rains

Aizawl, A devastating stone quarry collapse in Aizawl, the capital city of India’s Mizoram state, has resulted in the deaths of seventeen people, including young children, with several others still missing. The collapse was triggered by landslides following heavy rains brought on by Cyclone Remal.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the disaster occurred early today on the southern outskirts of Aizawl. The intense rainfall led to multiple landslides, one of which caused the fatal quarry collapse. Director-General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla reported that at least six individuals are presumed trapped beneath the debris. Efforts to rescue them are ongoing, but challenging conditions hamper the operation.

The consequences of the cyclone extend beyond the quarry incident. Aizawl has been isolated from the rest of the country following a significant landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar. Other intra-state highways are also obstructed by landslides, severely disrupting transportation and rescue efforts. Additionally, the town has experienced extensive damage to infrastructure, including cemeteries where over 150 graves were damaged or swept away, and farms along the Tlawng River have been submerged due to flooding.

The state faces a critical situation as emergency services strive to respond to the aftermath of Cyclone Remal and its impact on the region.
