Senate Approves Landmark Constitutional Amendment Bill

ISLAMABAD: The Senate has officially passed the Constitution (Twenty-seventh Amendment) Bill, 2025, marking a significant development in the legislative process after its approval with amendments by the National Assembly.

The bill was presented to the Senate by Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar. Sixty-four members voted in favor of the bill, surpassing the required two-thirds majority of the total membership of the House.

Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House, Senator Ishaq Dar, expressed gratitude to the Senators who supported the bill, describing it as a historic moment for Pakistan’s legislative framework. He highlighted the completion of the amendment process in alignment with legal and constitutional protocols.

In a briefing to the Senate, Minister Tarar outlined key features of the bill. A notable amendment clarifies the position of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. The current Chief Justice will remain in office, and subsequently, the senior-most among the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court will assume the role.

Further amendments include the addition of the term ‘Federal Constitutional Court’ in clause 2 (A) of Article 6. This clause asserts that no act of high treason will be sanctioned by any court within the country.
