KARACHI: A severe water shortage has halted industrial production in Karachi’s SITE area, leaving factories closed and workers idle for the past four days.
According to a statement by SITE Association of Industry, Ahmed Azeem Alvi. The interruption in the water supply has delayed export orders and raised concerns about potential layoffs.
Alvi attributes the shortage to an ongoing strike by sub-soil water suppliers, prompted by a crackdown from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC). He emphasized the urgent need for water to be supplied directly to factories, urging KWSC to resolve its disputes with the suppliers without impacting industrial operations.
The industrial leader warned of the risk of export order cancellations, particularly those secured at the Heimtextil fair, and expressed concern about the possibility of significant layoffs due to the production standstill.
The industrial sector in Karachi is already grappling with high production costs, and the current water crisis threatens to further undermine business confidence. Alvi called on authorities, including Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab and the heads of KWSC and SITE Ltd, to address the issue or inform the industry if relocation is necessary.
The SITE Association of Industry has issued this warning and requested a swift resolution to the water supply problem to prevent further economic repercussions.
