Sri Lanka Seeks to Strengthen Trade Ties with Pakistan: Invitation Extended for Colombo Summit 2025

KARACHI: The Consul General of Sri Lanka, P.K. Sanjeewa Pattiwila, emphasized the potential for increased trade and investment between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, focusing on untapped sectors such as agri-based industries, seafood, spices, and information technology. During a meeting at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), the envoy extended an invitation to Pakistani businesses for the Economic and Investment Summit 2025 in Colombo.

Pattiwila noted that although the current trade balance favors Pakistan, the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) offers significant opportunities for Sri Lankan entrepreneurs. Sri Lanka’s export portfolio includes tea, coconut products, and rubber goods, while Pakistan exports woven fabrics, cement, and pharmaceuticals.

The meeting was attended by KCCI President Muhammad Rehan Hanif and other key members, who echoed the sentiments of strengthening bilateral ties. Pattiwila highlighted the historical and cultural connections between the two nations, rooted in mutual respect and cooperation for over seven decades.

Tourism was also discussed, with an invitation extended to Pakistanis to explore Sri Lanka. The Consul General pointed out Sri Lanka’s favorable investment climate supported by liberalized policies and strategic location, which enhances its appeal as an investment destination in South Asia.

The upcoming summit, organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, aims to showcase Sri Lanka’s investment opportunities. Chairman of the Businessmen Group, Zubair Motiwala, emphasized the potential for increased trade, noting missed opportunities in sectors like tea and coconut products.

Motiwala pointed out the decline in textile exports from Pakistan to Sri Lanka, urging both countries to address this issue. He called for Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to assure both business communities of government support and to develop actionable strategies for strengthening economic ties.

KCCI President Rehan Hanif reaffirmed the historical friendship between the two countries and expressed commitment to enhancing bilateral trade. He highlighted Karachi’s role as a regional commerce hub and welcomed Sri Lankan businesses to explore opportunities in the city.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to fostering dialogue and building partnerships to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
