Standing Committee Calls for Inquiry into Police Misconduct with MNA

Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges voiced its discontent over the conduct of a Sub-Inspector from the Islamabad Police towards a Member of the National Assembly (MNA). The committee has recommended launching an inquiry into the incident and suspending the officer involved pending the investigation’s outcome.

According to a statement by National Assembly of Pakistan, the committee held its sixth meeting at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Mr. Muhammad Afzal, MNA. The session began with a prayer for the late father of Mr. Muhammad Raza Hayat Harraj, MNA.

Ms. Sabheen Ghouri, the MNA who raised the issue, briefed the committee about the incident on November 24, 2024, involving the police officer’s alleged misbehavior and use of offensive language. The committee has taken the matter seriously and insists on an inquiry to address the incident appropriately.

In another agenda item, the committee reviewed a privilege question from Makhdoom Syed Sami ul Hassan Gillani, MNA, and plans to summon the Regional Police Officer of Bahawalpur for further clarification in the next meeting.

The committee also deliberated on proposed amendments to rules 70, 73, and 250 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. After discussions, unanimous approval was given to these amendments, which concern the notice of questions and the handling of pending notices.

A separate privilege question raised by Mr. Sher Ali Arbab, MNA, against Peshawar Electric Supply Company officers was also discussed. An apology was offered by the Ministry of Energy’s Special Secretary, resulting in the committee deciding to close the matter.

The meeting saw participation from various MNAs, including those attending via Zoom, and senior officials from relevant ministries and police departments.
