Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Human Rights convened at Parliament House on January 1, 2025, under the leadership of Sahibzada Muhammad Hamid Raza, MNA. The meeting focused on political stability, the Ministry of Human Rights’ performance, and recent incidents in the capital. The committee called for collaboration between government ministries to protect citizens’ rights and set plans for future discussions and inspections.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, the committee began by extending New Year greetings and emphasizing the need for political stability to advance national prosperity. It criticized the Ministry of Human Rights for inadequate efforts in safeguarding citizens’ rights and recommended establishing better coordination with the Ministry of Interior. The committee postponed further discussions on this matter to a future meeting.
The meeting also addressed a recent incident that occurred on November 26, 2024, in Islamabad. The committee expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the event and resolved to invite the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Islamabad to provide a detailed briefing at the next meeting. Additionally, the committee planned a visit to Adyala Jail in the upcoming week to assess the conditions and facilities provided to inmates.
The session was attended by MNAs including Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Zeb Jaffar, Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, Sabheen Ghoury, Muhammad Riaz Fatyana, Gohar Ali Khan, Zartaj Gul (via video link), Dr. Nelson Azeem, Sehar Kamran, Wajiha Qamar, Shahida Rehmani, and Sharmila Sahiba Faruqui Hashaam.
