Startling data reveals high poverty rates in Haryana, India

Chandigarh, A significant portion of Haryana’s population, approximately 63%, is living below the poverty line (BPL), As per new data released by the state government. This high percentage of poverty-stricken residents highlights profound socio-economic challenges in the northern Indian state.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the statistics were derived from the family IDs or Parivar Pehchan Patras (PPPs), as reported by Haryana’s Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department. The data indicates that there are 44,90,017 BPL cards issued in the state, covering 1,80,93,475 individuals based on the PPP data. With Haryana’s total population standing at about 2.86 crore, these figures suggest that nearly two-thirds of its residents are categorized as BPL.

Faridabad district has the highest number of BPL families, followed by Mewat, Hisar, and Karnal, pointing to widespread economic disparities across the state. This revelation calls attention to the urgent need for targeted policy interventions and support systems to address poverty and improve living standards for a large segment of Haryana’s population.
