Sustainable Investments Key to Climate Resilience, Experts Assert at Islamabad Conference

ISLAMABAD: At the 28th Sustainable Development Conference organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, leaders from the United Nations Development Program, Nestle Pakistan, The World Bank Group, and the International Monetary Fund emphasized the need to align investments with climate resilience and inclusive growth. The high-level plenary underscored the importance of financing sustainable development through innovative mechanisms that blend resources from public, private, and multilateral sectors.

Jason Avanceña, CEO of Nestle Pakistan, highlighted the company’s commitment to renewable energy and low-carbon transitions, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 and 15. Avanceña stated that equitable access to capital is crucial for aligning investments with sustainable development, and affirmed Nestle’s goal to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Dr. Samuel Rizk of UNDP stressed the importance of collective action in achieving the SDGs, noting that Pakistan needs an estimated USD 50-60 billion by 2030. He called for innovative financing solutions that are co-designed and risk-managed to mobilize resources effectively.

Dr. Mahir Binici from the IMF discussed the institution’s recognition of environmental shocks as macro-critical challenges impacting economic growth. He detailed the IMF’s efforts in supporting climate-related reforms through the Resilience Sustainability Facility, which aims to enhance resilience to climate shocks.

Bolormaa Amgaabazar of The World Bank Group emphasized the organization’s focus on human development within its ten-year Country Partnership Framework for Pakistan. She highlighted the need for cross-sectoral interventions in areas like stunting, which has lasting impacts.

The plenary, moderated by Dr. Abid Suleri of SDPI, showcased the potential for collective action between public and private sectors to mitigate climate change impacts and ensure sustainable food systems for future generations.

Nestle Pakistan received multiple recognitions at the conference, including the Best Stall Award, reflecting its sustained commitment to sustainable practices and investments in the country. The company’s efforts align with its strategy to boost investment in renewable energy and regenerative agriculture as part of its broader sustainability initiatives.
