The Hague, The International Court of Justice has received an unprecedented number of written statements in the advisory proceedings concerning the Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change. A total of 91 statements have been filed, marking the highest participation in the court’s history for such a procedure.
According to International Court of Justice, the written statements were submitted by a diverse group of participants including nations from various continents, international organizations, and specialized groups within the allotted time frame, which was extended to March 22, 2024. The participants range from individual countries like Portugal and Colombia to international entities such as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
This high level of engagement underscores the global concern and commitment to addressing climate change through international law. The court has also granted exceptions to allow late submissions from Nepal, Burkina Faso, and The Gambia, further emphasizing the inclusive approach of the proceedings. The statements, which are currently confidential, may be made public during the oral proceedings, as per the court’s rules, enhancing transparency and global discourse on state obligations regarding climate change.
