Peshawar: Muhammad Anwar, a former Afghan Under-19 cricketer and current coach in Peshawar, is making a significant impact on the local community by nurturing young cricket talent. From struggling on the streets to representing Afghanistan in international cricket and now running his own coaching business, Anwar has overcome numerous challenges with the support of the International Organization for Migration’s Individual Livelihood Assistance programme.
According to International Organization for Migration, Muhammad Anwar’s cricket journey began in Peshawar, where he played cricket daily on the streets before his talent was discovered by captains of the Afghan U-19 cricket team. His participation in the U-19 team led him to compete internationally, including at the 2011 U-19 Cricket World Cup. Despite a promising career cut short by a severe leg injury, Anwar transitioned into coaching, transforming his passion into a successful micro-business.
With the support of the Individual Livelihood Assistance (ILA) programme, funded by the European Union, Anwar received Business Support Packages and Business Development Service training. These resources enabled him to expand his coaching business and open a shop selling sports equipment and accessories. Today, he coaches 118 young cricketers from both Afghan and Pakistani backgrounds and has formed a local sports team that competes in regional leagues.
Reflecting on his journey and the recent successes of the Afghan national team at the T20 Cricket World Cup, Anwar expressed pride and a continued commitment to developing cricket talent in the region. He aims to obtain Level 2 coaching certification to further enhance his coaching abilities and expand his impact on the international cricket scene.
Anwar’s story highlights the transformative power of sport and support programs like the ILA in changing lives and fostering community cohesion. His efforts not only promote cricket but also create job opportunities and unite young people from diverse backgrounds.
