UBG Leaders Oppose K-Electric’s Recent Rate Hike, Citing Severe Economic Disruptions

Karachi, Leaders of the United Business Group (UBG), including Chief Patron S.M. Tanveer and President Zubair Tufail, have called for an immediate reversal of a significant electricity rate increase approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for K-Electric. This hike is set to raise the per-unit cost of electricity substantially, impacting Karachi residents with higher electricity bills over the next few months.

According to United Business Group, the new tariff will escalate the cost per unit to Rs. 9.98 from June to September, following NEPRA’s recent decision based on monthly fuel adjustments. The UBG criticized the increase as unjustified, especially in light of ongoing long-hour load shedding by K-Electric that has already disrupted economic activities in Karachi. They argue that the additional charges, which will rise each month until September, will place a significant financial burden on millions of consumers, exacerbating the challenge of managing monthly household expenses.
