UNESCO Condemns Killing of Colombian Journalist Jaime Vásquez

Paris, The Director-General of UNESCO has condemned the killing of Jaime Vásquez, a Colombian social media producer, columnist, and blogger who was recently shot dead by unidentified assailants in a local store despite reportedly being under police protection. Vásquez was known for his work covering local governance issues.

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, this incident underscores the ongoing risks journalists face globally. UNESCO reiterated its commitment to promoting journalist safety and highlighted its efforts to raise awareness, build capacity, and coordinate the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity, aiming to combat the threat of violence against journalists and the persistent issue of impunity for their attackers.
