Business Alliances and Political Intrigue: The Unsettled Storm in Pakistan’s Commerce Federation

Karachi: The alliance between the United Business Group (UBG) and the Businessmen Panel (BMP) within the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has sparked ongoing debate and speculation. With the recent extension of the FPCCI office bearers’ term and elections, questions linger about the alliance’s true intentions and future moves.

The extension, which has shifted the power dynamics within the FPCCI, was secured by the current president despite internal opposition from within the UBG. This has led to skepticism within the business community about the feasibility of the anticipated alliance between UBG and BMP.

The Businessmen Panel Progressive (BMPP) recently demonstrated its influence with a power show in Karachi, but UBG has yet to publicly address key issues such as the proposed 50-50 power-sharing formula and rotational leadership. BMP has officially raised these concerns, but UBG’s silence continues.

During a media interaction in Karachi, BMP Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar expressed surprise over the extension of FPCCI elections, noting that UBG’s Patron-in-Chief had previously indicated elections would proceed this year. Nisar suggested that strategic maneuvers by the current FPCCI president led to the extension.

Nisar highlighted the potential for impeachment of the FPCCI president with a two-thirds majority and emphasized the need for capable individuals rather than wealthy candidates in the elections, given the high costs involved.

Regarding the UBG-BMP alliance, Nisar shared that a recent meeting involved representatives from both groups, with discussions on a 50-50 power-sharing model. Despite UBG’s silence, Nisar remains hopeful that commitments will be honored.
