Celebrating International Day of Women Judges Globally and in Pakistan

Islamabad, Today marks the observance of the International Day of Women Judges, a global recognition of women jurists and their significant contributions to the judiciary. The celebration, which includes Pakistan, emphasizes the importance of addressing women’s representation issues within judicial systems worldwide. This year’s theme, “Empathy and Action: Women and girls in carceral settings,” highlights the unique challenges and perspectives women and girls face in these environments.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the United Nations General Assembly officially established this commemorative day on April 26, 2021, with a resolution passed by consensus. Since its first global observance on March 10, 2022, the day has served as an annual opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women in the judiciary and to advocate for greater gender balance and sensitivity within legal systems. The focus extends beyond mere representation, emphasizing the critical role of empathy and action in addressing the specific needs and rights of women and girls in carceral settings, thereby promoting justice and equality within and beyond the legal profession.
