Commonwealth Secretary General Reviews Pakistan’s Disaster Response Capabilities at NEOC

Islamabad: During her visit to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) in Islamabad, Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland received a detailed briefing from NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik on the center’s advanced capabilities and its pivotal role in disaster management across Pakistan.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the briefing highlighted how the NEOC leverages multiple satellite feeds, software applications, and artificial intelligence tools to create a National Common Operating Picture. This technology supports robust digital risk assessments, enhances early warning systems, and strengthens risk communication and preparedness strategies throughout the country.

The NEOC, as described by Chairman Malik, acts as a vital hub for emergency response and coordination, connecting Provincial and District Disaster Management Authorities with relevant ministries, departments, and both domestic and international humanitarian partners. This network facilitates effective and rapid responses to disasters, especially during critical pre-disaster phases.

The Commonwealth Secretary General praised Pakistan’s proactive disaster management initiatives and the operational effectiveness of the NEOC. She also discussed the potential for increased collaboration between the Commonwealth and Pakistan in areas of climate resilience and adaptation, underscoring the importance of these efforts as global priorities.

Secretary General Scotland’s visit also included discussions on Pakistan’s preparations for the upcoming COP-29 event, reflecting a joint commitment to addressing global environmental challenges.
