Controversial UP Police Order Sparks Accusations of Bias Against Muslims

New Delhi: A new police directive from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has sparked significant controversy and condemnation from various Indian opposition parties, who argue it discriminates against Muslim traders along the Kanwar Yatra route.

According to Kashmir Media Service announcement issued on 19 July 2024, the directive requires all eateries on the pilgrimage route to prominently display the owners’ names to avoid “confusion” among pilgrims. This policy has been interpreted by some political leaders as an attempt to encourage economic boycotts of Muslim and Dalit-owned businesses.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera labeled the move “state-sponsored bigotry,” drawing parallels with discriminatory practices historically seen in Nazi Germany and apartheid-era South Africa. Similarly, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi highlighted the directive’s potential to mistakenly deter pilgrims from patronizing Muslim vendors, a situation he equated with historical acts of segregation.

Further criticism came from Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, who described the order as a “social crime” and called for judicial review without prior formal complaint (suo motu cognizance) by the courts.

The issue has also attracted attention from human rights advocates, with Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Saket Gokhale filing a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission, citing concerns over communal bias and the directive’s implications for social harmony.

This incident underscores the escalating tensions and communal polarization in India, where policies perceived as targeting minority communities fuel widespread concern and debate about discrimination and the erosion of secular values.
