Deputy Permanent Secretary receives donation from the Islamic Bank of Thailand to help Pakistanis suffering from floods

Islamabad: Mr. Pisanu Chanvitan, Deputy Permanent Secretary, received a donation of 100,554.65 Baht from Mrs. Uraiwan Maneechote, Senior Executive Vice President of the Islamic Bank of Thailand, to assist Pakistanis who had been suffering from devastating floods since August 2010. The said donation will be added to previous donations made to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ account, and will be given to the relevant Pakistani agencies via the Royal Thai Embassy in Islamabad.

The donation results from a conference of Organization and Network concerning Pakistan and Muslims in Thailand, presided over by the Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. At the conference, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had encouraged government authorities, as well as private and public sectors to play active roles in the humanitarian assistance process, for this was one of the most devastating floods in Pakistani history, leaving more than 1,600 people dead and affecting over 24 million Pakistanis nationwide.

To date, all sectors in Thailand have together provided assistance to Pakistan, and accumulated more than 447 million baht. Most recently, the Royal Thai Government has shipped 20,000 tons of rice valued at 424 million baht to Pakistan. To show their appreciation, the Government of Pakistan will host a ceremony to accept the donation of rice at the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office, Islamabad, in early June 2011.
