Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has called for greater negotiations and mediation for peaceful settlement of disputes. Addressing the curtain raiser ceremony for the upcoming Inter Parliamentary Speakers’ conference in Islamabad on Monday, he said that longstanding unresolved disputes from Kashmir to Palestine pose a threat to regional and international peace and security.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the need for strengthening multilateralism and international cooperation to deal with the multifaceted challenges facing the world. Ishaq Dar said Pakistan continues to urge the need for addressing the vicious cycle of poverty and rising global inequality by reforming the international financial architecture.
He highlighted the threat to millions across the world as a result of climate change, noting that Pakistan is once again facing devastating floods. These floods have displaced millions of people, caused colossal human and economic losses, and posed a serious challenge to Pakistan’s recent gains in sustainable development.
In his remarks on the occasion, Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said joint parliamentary action is necessary to deal with global challenges. He stressed the need for collective efforts to combat climate change, emphasizing that parliaments provide an excellent platform for dialogue and are architects of a peaceful and prosperous world.
Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also spoke on the occasion, highlighting the vital importance of parliamentary diplomacy in the current era. He said lasting peace cannot be achieved without addressing regional disputes, including the issue of Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
