Ethiopian Envoy Urges Karachi Businesses to Tap African Markets via Ethiopia

KARACHI: The Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, has called on Karachi’s business community to leverage Ethiopia as a strategic entry point into Africa’s vast market of 1.5 billion people. Speaking at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Dr. Abdula highlighted Ethiopia’s duty-free access to the European Union and the United States as a significant advantage for foreign investors.

During his visit, Dr. Abdula extended an invitation to KCCI members to attend “Invest in Ethiopia 2025,” slated for May 12-13, 2025, followed by Pakistan’s Single Country Exhibition from May 15-17, 2025. Ethiopian Airlines has announced a 12 percent discount for attendees, with affordable accommodations available.

The meeting was attended by several key figures, including Honorary Consul General of Ethiopia Ibrahim Tawab, and KCCI officials. Dr. Abdula emphasized the potential for partnerships at the upcoming events, with numerous confirmations from interested parties worldwide.

Dr. Abdula noted Ethiopia’s rise as a leading tourist destination, with a post-COVID tourism surge of 40 percent. He praised Pakistan’s “Look Africa and Engage Africa” policy, urging businesses to use Ethiopia as the gateway to the continent.

He explained that Ethiopia, with its efficient Djibouti rail network and seven dry ports, offers a seamless logistics experience. As one of the fastest-growing economies, Ethiopia’s GDP grew by 8.2% last year and is projected to rise further.

Chairman BMG Zubair Motiwala expressed hope that the Ambassador’s visit would foster economic ties, noting Pakistan’s trade deficit with Ethiopia. He highlighted Ethiopia’s agricultural efficiency and infrastructure investments as models for Pakistan.

Motiwala called for greater focus on Africa as a trade partner, advising against reliance on traditional markets. He stressed the need for Pakistani exports to penetrate African markets, where China and India are already significant players.

President KCCI Jawed Bilwani underscored Africa’s economic potential and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the “Look Africa” policy. He pointed out the need for diversified trade and identified key sectors for collaboration.

Bilwani emphasized the strategic importance of linking Djibouti Port with Gwadar Port to boost regional trade connectivity. He also highlighted investment opportunities in Pakistan’s SME sector, inviting Ethiopian investors to explore various industries.

Ethiopia’s demand for construction materials was also identified as an opportunity for Pakistani companies to enter the market.
