Karachi: In a move to modernize customs operations and reduce human interaction, the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has expressed strong support for the implementation of the Faceless Customs Assessment (FCA) system. Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of FPCCI, underscored the business community’s endorsement of this technological shift, which aims to streamline customs processes in Pakistan.
Sheikh emphasized the importance of minimizing dwell time, which currently averages 7.7 days in Pakistan, nearly double that of regional competitors. He called for increased green channel clearance and full operationalization of the complaints resolution cell to mitigate traders’ financial losses due to demurrages and detention charges.
Wajid Ali, Chief Collector of Customs Appraisement South, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to facilitating trade by reducing human contact and expanding the green channel for honest traders. Ali noted that over 85% of traders declare their consignments accurately, thus warranting an empowered system that supports efficient and transparent customs operations.
Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, Senior Vice President of FPCCI, highlighted the pressing need for an active complaints resolution cell to address legitimate grievances. He also welcomed the introduction of an AI-based customs valuation system, which promises precision and alignment with global trade trends.
Asif Sakhi, Vice President of FPCCI, praised the FCA system’s role in enhancing transparency and efficiency. He noted that FPCCI’s recommendations are reflective of over 290 chambers and trade bodies across Pakistan, offering a comprehensive platform for customs improvements.
Arshad Jamal, Convener of FPCCI’s Central Standing Committee on Economic Services Operations, reiterated the organization’s commitment to lawful and prompt complaint resolution, urging that FPCCI’s insights be duly considered by customs authorities.
